Postpartum Anxiety: What It Is and How Long It Lasts

It hit me like a freight train. I had heard all about postpartum depression, but no one ever mentioned postpartum anxiety. There I was, holding my newborn, convinced that every tiny cough meant something was wrong. I couldn’t sleep even when the baby was peacefully snoozing in the crib. I was drowning in fear that never seemed to go away. If you’re feeling this way, trust me—you’re not alone, and this isn’t just "new mom jitters." It’s postpartum anxiety, and it’s very real.

What is Postpartum Anxiety?

So, what exactly is postpartum anxiety? Unlike the baby blues or postpartum depression, postpartum anxiety (PPA) doesn’t just leave you feeling sad or withdrawn. It’s a constant, gnawing worry that something terrible will happen to your baby. Your mind might race with intrusive thoughts about your little one’s safety, or you might find yourself on high alert 24/7, checking on your baby’s breathing every five minutes. It can be emotionally, mentally, and physically draining—and it’s not something you can just snap out of.

Why Does Postpartum Anxiety Happen?

There’s a lot going on after you give birth. Hormones like estrogen and progesterone are plummeting, which can throw your emotions into overdrive. Add in the fact that you’re probably running on a few hours of broken sleep, and you’ve got a perfect storm for anxiety to settle in. It’s also important to note that having a baby is an enormous responsibility. You’re suddenly responsible for keeping a tiny human alive—and that pressure can be terrifying.

How Long Does Postpartum Anxiety Last?

Here’s the thing: postpartum anxiety doesn’t come with an expiration date. For some moms, it might ease up after a few months. For others, it can linger for a year or more. The length of time depends on a variety of factors, including how severe your anxiety is, how much support you have, and whether or not you seek treatment. But the good news is that with the right tools, you can get better.

Signs You Might Be Dealing with Postpartum Anxiety

Not sure if what you’re feeling is normal or something more? Some signs that you might be dealing with postpartum anxiety include:

  • Constantly worrying about your baby’s health or safety
  • Feeling like you have to check on them all the time
  • Avoiding social situations because you don’t want to leave your baby
  • Struggling to sleep because of your racing thoughts

One mom I spoke with didn’t realize she had postpartum anxiety until it got so bad she couldn’t sleep, even when her baby was sound asleep. She spent her nights researching every possible health issue, convinced that something bad was just around the corner. It wasn’t until she sought help that she realized what she was dealing with wasn’t just "being a new mom."

Treatment for Postpartum Anxiety

There’s no magic fix for postpartum anxiety, but there are treatments that can help. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is a great place to start. It helps you identify the thoughts that are triggering your anxiety and find healthier ways to cope with them. In some cases, medication might be necessary, and that’s okay too. There’s no shame in taking care of yourself, especially when it means being a better, more present mom.

Don’t forget the importance of a support system. Whether it’s a therapist, your partner, or an online support group, talking about your fears and anxieties can be incredibly healing.

When Should You Seek Help?

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, it might be time to seek help. If your anxiety is getting in the way of bonding with your baby, children, or partner, or if it’s keeping you up at night (for reasons other than feedings), or if it’s affecting your ability to function day-to-day, it’s time to reach out.
